This large magnificent bed once belonged to Don Lucio Lacson, whose palatial dako nga balay, literally ‘the big house’, once stood in front of the Sta. Ana Church of Molo, Iloilo. The dwelling must have been a magnificent one, because Jose Rizal, who visited Iloilo on his way to Manila from exile in Dapitan in 1896, was impressed by it. Don Lucio’s house passed on by inheritance to his brother Pablo and then to Pablo’s daughter, Petra, who eventually married a Yusay.

In 1936, Dona Petra demolished the old house and built what is now known as the Yusay-Consing House, since her daughter who had married a Consing occupied the house after her death in 1949. The property was eventually sold to SM who, because of insistent public demand, decided not to demolish the building, but refurbished it to be the showcase of their ‘Kultura’ Filipiniana products.

This massive narra bed is the second one of its type that the writer has seen over the last half-century and is the more elaborate of the two. It stands on massive cabriole legs that end in beautifully carved scrolled feet. Decorating the shoulder of each leg is a large shield-shaped cartouche bordered by scrolled cove moldings and an inverted ball and pointed finial at the bottom. Within the cartouche is with an oval boss surrounded by a concave molding and a ruffled border.

The bed frame has rounded edges with a concave molding below and aprons on all the visible sides carved at the center with a small escutcheon with a leafy bunch of grapes at the bottom. The latter is a symbol of fertility and prosperity. Flanking it on either side is a symmetrical fretwork of intertwining vines and scrolls with buds and leafy terminals. Above each cabriole leg is a stumpy neck with a convex top carved with a gadroon border that is surmounted by a small ring carved with a braided rope design into which the bedposts dowels are inserted. The latter, in the form of slender and tapering turned colonettes, stand on a ring base, have grooves carved into their shafts and end in attenuated spindle capitals with squash-shaped terminals that support the tester.

The exceedingly elaborate tester is joined together at the corners by an ungainly leafy scroll carved with a flattened squash at the sides and topped by a tapering finial of rings. A confection of wavy scrolls, the tester consists of parallel half-round moldings that flank a small central arch surmounted by a leaf and scrolls. Seemingly suspended from the arch by an endless knot (the Chinese symbol for harmony) is a pomegranate, the symbol for fertility, meaning many healthy children. It also symbolizes happiness in the family, as well as good luck for one's descendants. Hanging above the pomegranate is a string of stylized jade buckles carved with stylized bats, the symbol of happiness, joy and good fortune.
